Almost nobody is perfectly symmetrical — one shoulder sitting a little higher than the other, or hips that aren't perfectly level, is extremely common and usually not a sign of anything wrong on its own. Still, it's a natural thing to be curious about, whether you carry a bag on the same shoulder every day, favor one leg when standing, do a one-sided sport, or are just wondering what a photo would show. Why shoulders and hips are checked separately
Shoulder height and hip height don't always move together — you can have level hips with an uneven shoulder line (often from habitual bag-carrying or arm dominance), or the reverse. How to take a usable front-facing photo
- Face the camera directly, not at an angle — even a slight turn changes the apparent shoulder and hip line.
- Camera at chest height, held level (not tilted up or down).
- Both shoulders and both hips visible and unobstructed — arms relaxed at your sides rather than crossed or on your hips, which can hide the true joint position.
- Feet roughly shoulder-width apart, weight evenly distributed — standing with weight shifted onto one leg (a very common relaxed stance) will visibly tilt the hips for that photo without reflecting your everyday alignment.
- Plain background and even lighting so the pose model can confidently find all four keypoints (both shoulders, both hips).
How the measurement works
For each pair — shoulders, then hips separately — the tool takes the vertical pixel difference between the left and right keypoint and divides it by the horizontal distance between them (the shoulder-width or hip-width in that photo), turning it into a percentage that isn't tied to how close you stood to the camera. A perfectly level pair scores 0%; the tool labels results "Level" under 4%, "Slight asymmetry" 4–8%, "Noticeable asymmetry" 8–15%, and "Pronounced asymmetry" above 15%. It also reports which side is higher.
Common non-medical causes of a measured asymmetry
Before reading anything into a result, it's worth ruling out simple photo-taking factors first, because they're by far the most common explanation for an unexpected number:
- Uneven weight distribution in that specific photo — most people unconsciously lean onto one leg when standing casually, which tilts the hips measurably.
- A camera that isn't level — even a few degrees of tilt shifts both shoulders and hips in the same direction, which can look like a real asymmetry when it's actually the camera.
- One arm slightly forward or rotated relative to the other, which can pull the corresponding shoulder keypoint's detected position slightly.
- Standing at a slight angle rather than perfectly square to the camera — this is the single biggest source of apparent (but not real) asymmetry in a quick phone photo.
A good practical check: retake the photo two or three times, consciously standing square with even weight, and see whether the measurement is consistent. A number that moves around a lot between otherwise-identical attempts is telling you more about photo variability than about your body.

If a shoulder or hip asymmetry shows up consistently across several carefully-taken photos over time, and especially if it comes with back, hip, or shoulder discomfort, that's a reasonable thing to bring up with a physical therapist, chiropractor, or physician — they can examine it hands-on, check for leg-length differences or muscular imbalances, and determine whether it's clinically significant. This tool cannot make that determination; it can only tell you what a photo's geometry looks like.

- Is a little asymmetry normal?
- Yes — genuinely close-to-perfect symmetry is uncommon. Small, consistent asymmetries (a few percent) are typical and, on their own, not something to be concerned about.
- Can this detect scoliosis or a leg-length difference?
- No. It measures shoulder and hip height from a 2D photo only — it has no way to assess spinal curvature or leg length directly, both of which require an in-person exam or imaging.
- Should I use a side or front photo for this check?
- Front-facing — shoulder and hip level require seeing both sides of your body at once, which a side-profile photo can't show. Use the side-profile photo for the separate forward head posture check instead.
- Why did my left/right result flip between two photos?
- Almost always weight distribution or a slightly different stance between shots, or the camera not being perfectly level. Retake a few photos consciously standing square and evenly balanced, and trust the consistent pattern over any single shot.
